Visible Past
By learning about and discussing historical events that shaped the 20th century, it should be possible to understand the past, its mistakes and its similarities with the present.
With this assumption, the Visible Past educational project works with pupils, students and teachers as well as with initiatives for the public. The focus is on the rise of authoritarian regimes and the fragile path to democracy, focusing on three historical moments: the fascist period in Italy, the regime of the colonels in Greece and the dictatorial regime under Salazar in Portugal. The memory of the Holocaust is also an important theme.
Visible Past is divided into eight work packages in order to achieve various goals. These include: cultural and artistic activities for up to 1060 citizens, including a Visible Past European Festival; the organization of a three-day study trip to Portugal involving historians, journalists and 120 university students; and the development of an online training course and learning materials for teachers, students and young ambassadors.
Through the dissemination of historical events, visits to historically significant places, cultural productions and artistic performances, it is possible to make the past visible, to reflect on it and to learn from the mistakes of history.
The project was funded by CERV (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values).
