For decades, the rural region in southern Salzburg has not exactly been brimming with cultural offerings for young people. Those interested often had to travel long distances to Salzburg or other cities to experience cultural activities—but that has changed. The “Young Symphonic Winds” association is dedicated to ensuring that children and young people can now enjoy musical and cultural activities right here in Pongau.

The association consists of around 70 members aged 14 to 30 and has set itself the goal of offering local art and cultural projects that are accessible to a young audience. It provides musical talents with the opportunity to network, participate in challenging artistic projects, and get involved for social causes.

The group’s potential extends far beyond the stage: The members act as ambassadors for cultural initiatives in the region and introduce young people to local art. Local artists and institutions from various fields collaborate here with the young association members. Together, they organize workshops for children and teenagers in several Pongau communities—the offerings range from creative formats such as poetry slam, songwriting, and rap to stage productions featuring music, theater, juggling, or painting.

The workshops are facilitated by expert instructors, but the content is designed by the participants themselves. A strong emphasis on participation and empowerment underlies the entire project. The project is divided into six parts, and in each one a unique artistic space is created, which ultimately converges on a shared stage where the artistic disciplines merge. The goal is to raise public awareness of the importance of music and other artistic pursuits as leisure activities, while also encouraging young people to take the initiative, believe in themselves and their own strengths, and pursue their interests.
