X-Reality-Lab

X-Reality stands for Extended Reality (also known as XR) and refers to technologies that combine the physical and digital worlds. X-Reality is already widely used in areas such as gaming; interest is also growing in classical music and art, for example in the form of virtual and immersive concerts, orchestras, rehearsals and soundscapes, interactive art or transmedia scenography - although its use is still in its infancy.
In order to tap into the enormous potential of XR in immersive performative arts, the Mozarteum University Salzburg has founded the X-Reality-Lab. The project is supported by a call for proposals from the FFG (Austrian Research Promotion Agency), which is co-financed by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).
The X-Reality-Lab is an immersive experimental space with a hexagonal floor plan in which modern 3D projectors can project visual content onto both the walls and the floor. Behind the projection surface is a sophisticated audio system that, in combination with real-time 3D images, creates a unique, immersive audiovisual experience. The room is also equipped with a variety of sensors and tracking systems that can follow and identify people, objects and robots in the room. These technologies create highly interactive and reactive environments that enable a wide range of applications.
In addition to immersive performative arts and artistic research, the X-Reality Lab is also suitable for applications in the field of cultural heritage, experiments in human-machine interaction, data visualization and sonification. Together with many interested scientific partners at local, national and international level, these topics will be researched.
In summary, the X-Reality-Lab will be a pioneering institution for the Mozarteum University and the Salzburg university and research landscape as a whole, promoting the combination of art and science and opening up new horizons in research, teaching and communication. It will enrich the Salzburg region as a whole, promote international research cooperation and contribute to the creation of artistic productions at an international level, educate students in a contemporary way and provide impetus for the Austrian creative industries.
