Dandelin – Learning German through play
Following the first Dandelin app, which was developed in 2021 as part of an EU project, the successful story of Dandelin is now continuing with new ideas and materials. The free learning project ‘Dandelin – German for Children’ now offers even more opportunities to support children aged 4 to 8 in learning German. Dandelin is a curious little creature who discovers the world together with children – in German. With stories, songs, games and craft ideas, Dandelin accompanies children through their everyday adventures, whether at nursery, school or at home.
The project, funded by Erasmus+, focuses on playful learning with all the senses, without pressure to perform and with lots of fun discovering, speaking and understanding. Children learn German by moving, listening, singing along, imitating and thinking for themselves. Language is thus experienced and consolidated in a natural way. A key feature is the combination of digital and analogue forms of learning: an app supports the development of basic vocabulary through short, motivating game sequences that are intuitively designed and encourage independent learning. In addition, there are 24 new, ready-to-use activities on the topics of home, school, the park and the city. These materials can be used directly in class or in language support and offer a variety of exercises on vocabulary, grammar and everyday communication. The videos and songs integrated into the app and activities combine language with movement. Rhythm and repetition help children memorise words and sentences in a playful way. The catchy melodies invite children to sing along and create positive language experiences. All videos and songs are also freely available on YouTube, independently of the classroom. In addition, craft and movement games promote language development in the analogue space, with materials that can be easily integrated into everyday kindergarten or school life and actively involve children.
Another special feature of the project is its multilingual navigation, which facilitates access for children and families with different first languages. This makes learning inclusive and internationally compatible. All content is free of charge, ad-free and can be used without registration. This means it can be used flexibly in different learning environments – in class, in after-school care or at home. ‘Dandelin – Deutsch für Kinder’ aims to promote early childhood language learning and give children a playful introduction to the German language!
